I can certainly attest to the good availability of software for Linux. By far
and away, the biggest asset to the OS is that we generally have the source
code for most everything. That can help out a lot as you or your
distribution's package maintainers can easily recompile the source to fit
whatever changes the OS has happen to it. I am glad for this fact as it has
made moving to a 64-bit system very painless (so far, knock on wood!). Not
quite the case for anybody trying out Windows XP 64-bit.
