I just happened across a message where someone wrote that they were
"phasing out Solaris." I assumed they were probably going to Linux, but
they didn't say that. Anyway, this led me to do these Google searches:
"phasing out solaris"
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22phasing+out+solaris%22
hits = 219
"phasing out solaris" linux
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22phasing+out+solaris%22+linux
hits = 213
"phasing out linux"
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22phasing+out+linux%22
hits = 22
The small number for the last one surprised me a little bit because Linux
is such a common term on the 'net:
Linux
http://www.google.com/search?q=linux
hits: 1.2 billion!
Solaris
http://www.google.com/search?q=solaris
hits: 164 million
Conclusions: People who are phasing out Solaris are often switching to
Linux. People are almost never phasing out Linux. Even the 22 hits above
seemed to be mostly about phasing out Linux support contracts, possibly
because local IT staff had enough training to handle Linux on their own.
