Maybe IBM felt the same and that is one of the reasons why the are embracing Linux with such enthusiasm. I think the main reason they are big supporters of Linux is that they can see that it is the future. In epidemiology we can predict a future age distribution in the US population based on the current age distribution along with current birth and death rates in the various age categories. It's kinda like this with predicting the future of an operating system. If the young people are using Linux now, and those young people are going to grow up to be the IT pros at businesses in a few years, then the IT pros of the future are going to want Linux. IBM execs know that they have to stay future-oriented, and Linux is the future, at least the forseeable future.
