I tried to put up a box or two for hacking attempts as part of the Info
Security Class I teach (HMI8435) and the department decided that the
liability surrounding doing so was not something they were not willing
to even discuss. The thought of misdirected hack attempts or
inadvertent denial of service of other systems because of errantly
targeted or badly crafted attacks was just something they could not
risk. We even suggested doing so in a disconnected unique network with
a physical air gap to any other network and the answer was a resounding
NO.
That doesn't make any sense, but if they had said that they wouldn't allow
it because it is wrong to teach students to break into computers, they'd
at least have leg to stand on -- maybe just one weak leg, but something.
