Here's a test to see if it's anything to do with the files:
mkdir /var/testdir
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/var/testdir/bigfile bs=1024 count=$(( 1024*1024 ))

now you have a dir with a 1G file of random data inside.

change your script from "/var/ftp/files" to "/var/testdir" and see
what happens...
