The window manager I really liked was windowmaker. It's kind of fallen
out of favor, and setting up the application icons was a pain. I find
the best part of most operating systems is when the file manager is tied
closely to the desktop. I think a lot of the glitz and eye candy has
distracted people from making a really good user interface. Strange
thing is, I don't find KDE that superfluous.
I'm actually developing a fondness for XFCE on my RHEL4 workstation. It
just seems so snappy...
