i think gnome is more windows nt/2k like. kde seems closer to xp (and
now vista) with this crystal icons, animated menus, etc.

i prefer gnome over kde, but if given a choice other than those two, i
would run fluxbox or something unlike windows all together. hence the
statement, "i guess i'm the odd guy out who doesn't want an ms windows
style environment."

this is assuming you go with default settings. gnome does have bubbly
icons and themes and kde has simpler themes...but a stock install of
gnome yeilds less fluff than kde, in my opinion.
