Doesn't vmware have a product where you can virtualize apps on a server?
In the past, I've talked to a co-worker who mentioned one of the neat
things is that it could run on linux servers which you could then
oversubscribe back to windows dumb (or smart) terms. Oversubscription
is sort of in name only as nobody is using 100% of the processors 100%
of the time.
I've been using VMware pretty heavily for several months now on a RHEL4
host and have been very pleased with it. I was running my primary (read,
"token") Windows machine in a VMware session for Outlook and intranet
(IE only) access and it worked great.
Essentially, work has replaced my group's collections of 3-7
workstations with a single box (250G hard drive and 4G of ram w/ a 3.4G
P4)so that we can test various configurations without all the hardware
laying around. The only complaint I've had so far is that, at 4Gb, the
machine eats almost a full gig for the PCIe bus. With this box, I've had
up to 5 virtual machines running without any real problems. Some churn,
yes, but the setup works quite well.
Additionally, VMware has now released a free player application that
will allow someone to build a virtual machine using the full version,
and then hand it off to another person who can run it using the player.
I've tried a couple of different setups with it, and other than the
occasional issue with the Windows box not understanding the device
layout, it works well also.
