I don't run gnome at all, so I am not able to try it.

But I did look through the gdm source code, and there are definitely 
situations in which the binary will add -nolisten tcp to the arguments 
of X.  Now it looks like it shouldn't do this if (a) it is not made 
explicit, or (b) DisallowTCP is not true (do a system wide grep on 
DisallowTCP - maybe it is set somewhere else) or (c) if there is a 
"query" in the command line (whatever that is).
