Thanks to all who replied, Stephen, Ryan, Rick. I am running out of time, so I 
need to get back to this later.

Based on what I have seen it seems advisable to use ssh anyway and leave port 
6000 closed.

Ryan, the gdmconfig program you suggested is really interesting. I didn't know 
that one. Even more interesting is that under the security tab "Always 
disallow TCP connections" is _unchecked_ ?!?

Still unsolved, but thanks again for your suggestions.
