I do admit that using my wireless network in Windows-XP is slightly
easier than what I do in FreeBSD:
The problem with XP is that it does a bad job of keeping the connection
up. It gets disconnected probably 10x as much as the same hardware does
in Linux and it has significantly more problems with reconnecting
properly. I tell it which AP to connect to and to ignore other APs but
it still tries to disconnect from my AP (when the connection is working
just fine) and connect to the other APs. It can be a pain in the ass in
a crowded apt complex like this one with lots of APs around. Doh!
Also XP's network stack is horribly slow. It can take hours to transfer
the same files I can transfer in 10 minutes with Linux regardless of
what app is used. (OS X has this problem too).
With these problems I'd rather deal with five more minutes in the
intital configuration than suffer ongoing issues. Besides in Linux and
BSD you can always get a pre-made app to ease this sort of pain if your
distro doesn't come with such a tool or just write your own.
