That will probably work.
If your custom installed packages are in /usr/local, you can tar it up
and drop it in your new install. No imaging required. Also save
config files in /etc
Most of /var is just logs, lock files, and cached stuff. No big loss.
But you mentioned PHP4. Were you keeping web stuff in /var/www? it
would suck to lose that.
