What's a good bash book? How about the O'Reilly "Learning the Bash
Shell?" Any recommendations? Maybe someone knows a good web page for
getting into bash?
Probably not exactly what you need, but this is the only bash reference
I really ever use: http://en.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/index.html
That is a really good one -- Matt Klaric also recommended it back in June.
Another good thing to read, I would say, is this classic paper on csh/tcsh
vs. sh/bash programming:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/unix-faq/shell/csh-whynot/
It helps to clarify some of the issues in choosing or designing a shell
scripting language and it teaches the reader about some shell features.
I'm sure most of you have seen it -- I think I saw it first nearly 10
years ago but I couldn't appreciate it then as well as I can now.
For newbies: tcsh is backward compatible with csh and bash is backward
compatible with sh. csh is barely usable as a login shell but tcsh is
fairly feature rich and quite alright for new users. bash is also feature
rich and a best choice overall, I would say.
