Scheme is an excellent language to learn and many other languages are based on features that originated from Scheme. It isn't often used as the primary programming language but it is frequently used for writing backend scripts to other programs. The GNU project pushes it in this regard as the programming language of choice to embed inside other programs. Gimp is one major program that has long used it in this regard.

I guess the whole book is done using the Scheme dialect of Lisp, which may be a good thing, but it isn't very widely used, is it?
