Try Pygame (a Python library). It is pretty easy to learn, has plenty of working games as examples, and the games written in it will work on practically any computer (Windows, Linux, OS X). The people on the Pygame IRC channel tend to be friendly and very helpful.

I'm sure he'd love to write games. He also is interested in writing screen savers. One big thing he wants to do is write a screen saver that shows a Rubik's cube slowly moving about (in screen position and orientation) while being scrambled and solved. He knows that won't be easy and it will take a while to learn the skills to write that screen saver.
