I'm sure he'd love to write games. He also is interested in writing screen savers. One big thing he wants to do is write a screen saver that shows a Rubik's cube slowly moving about (in screen position and orientation) while being scrambled and solved. He knows that won't be easy and it will take a while to learn the skills to write that screen saver.

That sounds great. The xlock screen saver already has a mode that does this, if he wants to see a model program. (It's probably written in C using the OpenGL library, so probably not for beginners.)
