I think the problems with people not showing up would be:
1. Work. I know I had to on Saturday, so I came at about 2:30 instead of
at 11.
2. It's the summer. All of the people who lived in the dorms last year
(all of this fall's sophomores and quite a few of the juniors) aren't
going to be around. Many people sublet so they can go back to their
hometowns to work for the summer. Only those who could actually find a
job here in Columbia over the summer and couldn't get a subleaser are
going to be here.
3. People are generally thinking about going out and partying on
Saturdays or are "otherwise occupied." Well, at least quite a few of the
people I know are. I'm not a partier, but generally the early afternoon
is when the alcohol runs are made and the cups gotten so that everything
can be in place at the party's start at 7-8pm or so. I don't think that
the stereotypical "antisocial computer geek" description fits very many
here at MU (neither does the "geeky engineer can't find a date" one as
haven't seen but a couple of truly geeky engineers and I've seen
thousands of 'em!), so I think the social aspect is valid.
It's a shame that no more than just the three of us showed up as I
enjoyed talking to others who are interested in Linux and computers in
general. Most people I know can use Webmail and /maybe/ set up a
wireless NIC. If they've ever even heard of Linux, they generally just
shudder because there is a reputation of difficulty that precedes it. So
I am rather at a loss for people that can talk on a more technical level
about things with. I personally would try to make MLUG visible to the
technical majors (engineers and CS majors) as that would likely be the
most fruitful.
I never wanted to "defy the man" when I came to school. My parents went
to college in the late '70s and they said the "man-defiers" all just
smoked pot in the halls, protested anything that tickled their fancy,
and flunked out after a semester or two. I just wanted to "git 'r done"
with a minimum of jacking around. That's why I jumped in with both feet
into classes or else I would have had to stay a 5th year if I did 12-13
hours/semester instead of 16 or so. That also applies in my choice of
OSes- I was tired of jacking around with all of the broken programs and
wizards whose magic was less than perfect in XP, so I installed Linux
with zip for experience and learned as I went. I am much happier for
having done so. Maybe that could be a selling point- you're not in high
school anymore, so it's time to graduate to a better OS? That would at
least get a few laughs!

This would be just the thing to interest returning and new students
this fall. Besides... the new students are looking to defy the man.
This isn't your father's Oldsmobile... er operating system.
It's a good thing to get them early on in the semester while they are
still under the illusion that they can take on the world and juggle 18
hours of classes & 8 extra curricular clubs and the soup kitchen 2
nights a week.

So far two people (it is 2:45) :( Linux non-noobs one that is doing a
network install of OpenBSD from a Gentoo server that I setup as a local
mirror box... (he came for bandwidth) And another Suse user who came in
to chat and take a gander at the hardware and drop off CDs :)
Annoyance is that I have been prepping for this for a full month now:
Here is the gear (wish you could see the room I reserved it is awesome):
Private full 10/100 switched network... A local distro mirror server...
plus several burned CD / DVD based distos... 7 flat panel work areas
(just missing CPUs)... a projector running movies... cases of soda in
a beer fridge on wheels... Center tables full of swap hardware with no
one to Swap with... Literally a wheely cart full of Hard Drives...
And Pizza was going to be ordered but, I think I am going to save my
money and eat Taco Bell...
I am calling it a total waste of my Saturday!
Maybe I am a total glutton for punishment but, maybe next month there
will be better turn out...
I'll let everyone know when the next installaton is :)
