His purpose is to continue to offer a platform-agnostic operating system like Linux is. What happens if Apple maintains MacOS X's ability to run on PowerPC and x86 both? Then it's the only truly portable OS out there. Even with Linux you have to get a distro specific to your architecture (though the choices are vast).
THAT would be EPIC. Same set of installation DVDs regardless of what hardware you bought...
