I purchased an academic copy of OpenStep (NeXT Step 4.0) back in about
1997. It ran on whitebox Intel systems with limited supported hardware.
Shortly after that software release, NeXT ceased to exist... I am not
saying anything about Apple's future, I just thought Dave's statement
was kind of funny.

I wager that OSX will run on whitebox intel systems, but there will be a
very strict supported hardware compatibility matrix. Thinking about
this, I think that Apple realizes that in the long term hardware is a
sinking ship for the low end. Even Dell will, eventually, be sunk once
Chinese companies introduce disposable PCs sold over the 'net.

The future for low end is software, services and consulting.
