When you boot from the rescue disk you can mount your hard disk.
Once you have it mounted, chroot to it - say you mount it as /mnt/hda
then chroot /mnt/hda should do the trick.
Now you're back to your working system - something like init 3 for multi
user mode or init 5 if you usually boot to a graphical environment
should get you back to your normal working system, assuming the rescue
kernel has everything you need to run off of.
