What is Eric S Raymond's (ESR's) claim to fame? Did he write some code
that established him as an ubergeek? I know that he wrote Fetchmail.
Actually, he didn't. What you want to read is this, which I have to
admit is a bit flamey, but in a classic way:

Wow. That is a good one. He's every bit the egomaniac he appeared to be.
RMS is even nicer to ESR than ESR deserves.
ESR wrote the Jargon File and The Cathedral and the Bazaar, both good
things, but not computer programs.
Didn't write the Jargon File, either. He just kinda assumed the
maintainership.
Interesting. So he's way less than I thought he was and I was already
underwhelmed by his accomplishments (relative to his status).
I'm not fond of the dude, primarily because he writes self-important
stuff like this:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/12/10/0821224&mode=thread
That happened not too long after he gave a talk for our MLUG meeting.
Remember that? Suddenly he was (on paper) a multi-millionaire. I wonder
how long that lasted. I also wonder if he got to spend any money before
VA Linux went under and they all lost everything. Or maybe the turned
into VA Software?...
http://vasoftware.com/
yes, I guess that's what they did:
http://www.vasoftware.com/company/docs/2001_VA_10-K.pdf
Looking at their quarterlies on p. 46, it looks like they were doing
almost no business and losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
