Opps should have stated that this for a home network and I am not
running wins. I guess I could have samba on my server act as a wins
server. Funny thing is I did not have to do this before. I just
upgraded from MDK 10.1 to 2005(10.2) with a fresh install today.

Edit /etc/nsswitch.conf (I think that's the right file off the top of
my head), and add wins to the lookups. I think it's like:
"hosts: dns files wins"
then, make sure your samba config file has the right wins server set.
i.e. /etc/samba/smb.conf add or set the following lines:
name resolve order = host wins bcast
wins server = 128.206.2.72 128.206.2.73
(someone else can check those wins settings - I think that's accurate
off the top of my head).

OK can somebody tell me how to set my networking settings set so I
can ping my linux server from my linux lappy via its samba name? My
router is registering both machines with its name. BTW the router is
static and the lappy is DHCP. Both running MDK 2005.
