I’m not sure if this was mentioned earlier but I thought I would respond to the topic as well.  Amateurs are licensed as primary operators in the 2390-2450MHz range.  It is possible to purchase a modified Wi-Fi device that will transmit your callsign every 10 minutes but will still allow you to transfer data as usual using 802.11a/g.  Since amateur radio operators can transmit up to 1500 watts PEP (not that you would want or need to!) you could probably setup some method to link two distances less than 30 miles with some pringles cantennas and slightly enhanced Wi-Fi devices.  Now all you need are 2 50+ foot towers to get over the curvature of the earth problem!

Of course, what would be really cool is to do this in the 420-440MHz or the 902-928MHz amateur bands.  You could then just have two 20ft vertical antennas and transfer data around 10 miles.  Most amateur equipment is analog so you can’t really get the bandwidth you need, but you can modify some of the Motorola digital radios to work inside ham bands.  These radios are really cheap for the 902-927MHz ham band.  Friends of mine in KC run a digital 900Mhz repeater using these radios.

I’m wondering though about the legality of using the internet over amateur radio.  It would be fine as long as their wasn’t any commercial traffic going on but as soon as you bought a book from Amazon.com you would be violating Part 97.  You also couldn’t probably click on advertisement banners. =)  Darn!  I guess I need to keep living where I can get broadband…

There are several of us extra class operators who were previously members of the student amateur radio club (w0zon) on campus and in the past we have given classes/exams to groups like the storm chase team.  I would be willing to do that again if there is enough interest.  The Icom 706MK2 VHF/HF radio for the student amateur radio club sits in my cabinet at work waiting for 5 students to decide to reform the club and petition campus for a club station.
