thanks to watching george on saturday, i decided to mimic his server a
bit. we are in testing right now to replace our aging nt 4.0 domain
with a nice new samba/ldap one. we'll never get away from windows
desktops, at least for mission critical systems, but nothing is wrong
with running linux servers.
anyway, i took some hardware i had laying around to build the test
system. specs: celeron 1.7GHz, 256MB RAM, 2x80GB drives running in a
(software) RAID 1 configuration...all backed by the swankiness of
gentoo linux kernel 2.6.11-r5.
the box is fully installed and running like a baby; well, like a
crappy celeron 1.7 baby can run, anyway.
:)
thanks for the idea, george.
the only tricky part of the install is making sure you remember to
enable all the kernel modules and such you need and doing a manual
grub install...since you have to install the mbr on both physical
drives so if one dies the other can still boot.
i don't know what raid config george was installing, but the raid 1
here will be a huge help. we just lost a scsi out of our original nt
domain controller. i certainly don't want to live through that again.
cheers.
