It is shorter range, but it is the same speed as 802.11g under ideal conditions, and better than 802.11g in less-than-ideal conditions.
AFAIK, 802.11i is only a security-related standard, much like how 802.1D is the bridging standard, regardless of the topology it's used with. In theory, you could deploy 802.11i on an 802.11a, b, or g network.
The above is hardly Gospel, but reflects what I'm reading in the NetworkWorld article on 802.11i right now. ;-)
