I will give ACPI a shot...  That is one thing that I haven't tried...   
So far, I have tried different kernels 2.4 and 2.6...  Heck I even tried 
the nifty Gentoo genkernel with its custom initrd... 

If there was a way to tell Grub that root=(hd0,3) instead of 
root=/dev/sda3  I would be golden...

Fun challenge tho...
