To update -- I'm sure everyone is waiting breathlessly -- I got my old
box running quietly last night.

First, there was an old hard drive in there making a high-pitched
whine. Easily replaced with a modern, quiet drive.

Second, the cheap CPU fan had a bad bearing. I solved this by
unplugging it. (I also underclocked the CPU from 450 to 200 MHz. It
helps that it is the a K6-III+, the mobile version. It also helps to
set the multiplier right. The K6III interprets "2x" as "6x". The
processor gets pretty warm at 600MHz with no fan... )

Third, the old LaserJet's fan made an audible whirr. The new printer
(Lexmark Optra R+) goes totally silent after 10 minutes of no
activity.

So now my print server is totally quiet and I am free to think my deep
thoughts in peace.

Regards,
Mark
