It's zero because it's not a "real" file.  The kernel will give you
the load average when you read this file.

e.g.:
0.28 0.37 0.19 2/96 4747

Those first three numbers are also given by the 'uptime' or 'w'
commands.  A possible workaround?  But I think those commands probably
just read the /proc file... yes, strace confirms it.

post the code that reads /proc/loadavg, and we'll figure a out a way
around it. I'm coding php this afternoon anyway. yuck.
