What stage of gentoo install did you use?
Can we see a copy of your XF86Config and XF86Congfig-4 files?

Did you “emerge ati-drivers” at install and what happens if you do an “emerge sync && emerge –up ati-drivers”?  (you may need to get X.org instead of Xfree)

And why Xfree instead of X.org ?
