I think the thing that is confusing people is the name. Basically, as I
understand it, Firefox is the new version of the Mozilla browser.
Thunderbird, which was the mail part of Mozilla, has been decoupled from
the browser. I don't think it's a completely new program, but more of a
next generation of the Mozilla code. So don't think of it as changing
browsers, but more like upgrading. It's kind of like changing from the
older Netscape to the 7.0 version. It was derived from the old code but
had so many improvements that it seamed like a completely different
program.

Well, I guess the three word answer would be "a brighter future".
Mozilla was a kitchen sink project, while Firefox and Thunderbird are
targeted at more specific problems. I never used Mozilla for email,
so I can't comment on that, but Firefox is generally faster and has a
smaller memory footprint than Mozilla. But more important than that,
I think the Mozilla Foundation is focussing development effort on
Firefox and Thunderbird, so that's where you should see more
improvements and bug fixes down the line (for the best-supported
platforms).

Firefox is quite impressive, in my opinion. I do a lot of work on a
Mac, and the default browser there is Safari, another very good
browser. But Firefox would be the only thing I would ever use if it
weren't for a few oddball issues that it still has. (Refreshes in
gmail can be incomplete, my default window size now (for some reason)
doesn't let me see the status bar, and I can't get that fixed
easily...little things.)
