Thanks. From searching the web, I think it is more often called a
"pre-gap" (rather than "pregap" - which matters when searching) and it is
part of an "enhanced CD format" (developed in 1994) that won't work on all
CD players. But there wasn't a lot of info on "pre-gaps" and most of it
goes back to the mid-1990s, and this web page indicates that Microsoft
stopped supporting it in 1995:

So I'm still hoping that Michael or someone can direct me to a better
resource on this.
