i'm installing 2004.3 on my sony vaio s150 notebook and it seems to be 
working fine now.  for the past couple of days bootstrapping has failed 
on me.

i found a couple of work-arounds in the forums.  the missing protector 
package was solved by simply adding an old mirror back into my 
GENTOO_MIRRORS list in make.conf.

this time, i also ran bootsrap.sh -f first to fetch all the files i 
needed...since the bootstrap was failing at the download portion...first.

i haven't had any errors yet, today.  knock on wood.
