i've been running mysql 4.x+ (ver 14.7 distrib 4.1.7, for pc-linux i686
to be exact - taken from mysql > status; command) on an amd archlinux
0.7 box for a few months now. the only issue i had was with phpmyadmin,
not mysql.
archlinux's package is pretty bleeding edge.
mysql 4.1.7-3
A fast SQL database server
Current :: daemons

i don't recall which mysql version was installed first. but, i've never
had a problem with upgrading to the latest package release in
archlinux. phpmyadmin broke a few times...and i had to fix things in
that...but all my data, and the server itself never even blinked.
i don't run redhat servers, so i can really help you there.
:)
