The educational discount price for a download version of VMWare is about
$120. Here's one place to buy, there are others:

So if you're a student or staff, that's a final price of $20. Oh, BTW,
if you're faculty, they'll give you a copy just for asking nice.

I use VMWare here at work to test distros, and also as a sometimes
workstation if I need to run an X client. I use the Windows
version--I've read that Linux works better in a VM than Windows, but
we're a Windows desktop shop here.

You can do some really cool stuff with the virtual networking between
virtual machines. If you Google for VMWare and Honeypot you'll see a
few.

But I think VMWare's best feature is that it lets you play with
"what-if" scenarios: set up your virtual box(es), and then try out stuff
that you'd never have the guts to try in the real world.
