Btw.. if your machine has firewire and is running OS x you can have some 
fun with this, and may have a work around for the problem.   Bridge two 
machines using a firewire cable.  Boot the working machine.  Boot the 
non-working machine while holding down 'T' on the keyboard...  This will 
mount the drive in the non-functioning computer as an external firewire 
drive on the functioning computer, and allow you to mess with the 
contents however you want to.  It's a great way to archive a disk w/o 
running into problems with files being 'open' or 'protected' by the 
operating system.

If it doesn't work... then you probably have bigger problems like the 
afore mentioned logic board or drive controller.

If it does work, you'll get that nice big firewire logo in the center of 
the screen on the slave computer... something like a triangle with 
various dashes and such around it if I recall correctly.
