Yeah, but that takes a while, and you have to know what to back up and
what not to...

They may use goast or something, back up the data, clean house, restore
from back-up and go on their way.

That would be another way to insure that at least most of the data would
stay intact.

I've already said how nuts (actually, I used the word irresponsible)
that is.

Bet they make you sign a waiver before they erase everything you hold
dear... (assuming of course your average user who keeps their life on
their harddrive w/o backups, and that they do wipe and restore.)
