I did an ssh -X bengal (bengal is now working again).  I looked at the 
file .Xauthority and it had not been updated since 2003 in the days when 
I had logged onto on of the sgivw computers (when the GCB labs were 
linux instead of windows).  That this is not being set tells me that the 
X-forward function is not working.  (I think it needs the xauth program, 
which seems not to be installed on bengal.  You could try copying your 
own xauth to bengal - no idea if that would work.)
