I've used the Nvidia drivers under FreeBSD for a couple of different cards - they're nice and fast, but the latest batch does require a kernel patch. Nvidia doesn't update as often for FreeBSD as they do for Linux, but the drivers are of high quality and even the slow cards are fast. There were new drivers in the ports collection a couple of weeks ago and they're blazing and stable. Nice.

The Open Source Radeon drivers don't support chips with R300-based GPUs, and it doesn't look like there are any ATI-proprietary drivers for FreeBSD. If you stick with the XFree86/X.org "radeon" source drivers, I think you're stuck with and older card like a 9200 if you want fast OpenGL. Here's a thread from earlier this year: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2004-March/039670.html. If you do get an ATI, it looks like the fastest cards supported by the source drivers are the 8500-based cards; later cards with higher version numbers were essentially rebranded, cut-down 8500s, up until but not including the 9500. If ATI does ever plan on releasing FreeBSD drivers, I'd be a bit weary since I've heard reports of stability problems.

Subject: [MLUG] Video 3D hardware acceleration on Linux/FreeBSD

I am pondering getting a decent 3D card to work with FreeBSD (whose
requirements are probably very similar to Linux). I am torn between
getting an ATI card or an NVidia card. I know that an Nvidia card works
well with the Nvidia drivers, but I am wondering how well the ATI
drivers with X windows compare? (For example, does the ATI card require
a modification/module to the kernel like the Nvidia cards, and if it
doesn't, does the lack thereof make it slower.)

Please share your experiences with me.

Stephen
