update:

i have the hardware on order...should be in tomorrow, friday at the latest

1 digium t100p (495 ea)
1 handytone 286 analog-ip converter (75 ea)
10 budgetone 101t ip phone (75 ea = 750)

1 custom built server (amd 2400), $500-600.

archlinux 0.6 (widget) (0 ea)
asterisk pbx (0 ea)

the networking hardware (ie, auto-sensing switch, patch panel, cable,
flush jacks, plugs, etc etc) totals around $740

the entire project build is under $3000. that is 1000 less than just
the phone system a local telco quoted me.

i'm going to spend saturday running cable and configuring the firewall.
sunday will be spent on linux and the phones.

huge amount of work for just little old me...but should be an
interesting sandbox for asterisk when i get finished.

just compare the quotes: 3000 for a brand new network and voip phone
system OR 1000 for a brand new network plus 4100 for a pbx with
voicemail from a local telco.

and, those prices don't include my labor cost or consider my retainer
fee for the next 6 months for support.

the traditional telco way would cost around 8K in the end. the
asterisk/linux way is around 5k-i'm working cheap because i know the
owners personally.

tell me again why i would ever go back to traditional telco prices?

:)
