As someone that frequently deals with gigs of mail I suggest the easiest
method is to copy and truncate the mail spool, compress the copy, and
ssh it out. If you don't want to try to move the whole thing as a single
file you could use procmail to sepperate it into easier to manage pieces
and then compress and download each piece. (This of course requires you
do the resubmit the mail to yourself first.. which could be a pain.) If
procmail isn't your bag then you can use something like Pine to sort the
mail into smaller files. Or you could always use fetchmail if your idea
of a bulk of mail is something more reasonable than my idea of a bulk of
mail. I usually use the procmail method when my mail gets clogged up
such that normal methods are failing to download. It's not quite as easy
as the first method but it's less likely to lose any mail and I find the
smaller <1GB files easier to manage. Having switched from using Mozilla
to fetchmail for downloading mail though I rarely have that problem. I'm
working on setting up my own mail servers which should completely remove
the problem as mail will be completely sorted into my db on the server. :)
