Well - I bought it. Then I realized my video card sux for 3D and went out and
bought a PCI 256MB DDR, dual 350Mhz RAMDAC, Nvidia GeForce4 big-ass video card
for $109. The max quality requires a 512MB vid card - they don't exist
commercially yet.
Doom 3 is pretty damn cool - and scary. That may sound stupid - but honestly,
they've made it such that every time you see something or kill it you get
excited. You hear voices, footsteps, machinery, etc. There's a very good
interface to the game - information is stored and easily retrieved, the display
is minimal but effective.
It is also hard - this is NOT a run n gun game. If you try you will get dead
very quickly. I didn't even finish the first mission but have found it to be
challenging (or course I'm not very good). There is a decent amount of
interaction and side things to do - find information that contains a code to
open a locker with some ammo inside for instance. Pretty much everyone can be
spoken to.
I don't really care for 1st person shooters and really like this - it was worth
$150 (given that I play in small doses and enjoy the game thoroughly, it will
keep me entertained for months).
