I gotta go with the Linksys.  I first bought a Netgear for the reasons you 
mention + it had a bigger rebate, but 2 different laptops (an HP with XP and 
a PowerBook with Panther) just would not "find" it, even from three feet away 
and broadcasting everything.  After messing with it for an hour or so, I took 
it back and got the Linksys--it worked 1st try, took about 10 minutes.  As 
for range, I don't know absolutely, but we have a 3-br house with the router 
on a very full basement-office bookshelf and it works just fine from anywhere 
in the house.
