"What are the slowest machines that you guys have running Linux on? "
P 166, 96MB RAM, 512MB HD -- I've run several distributions on this machine, but I am the most pleased with Slackware (without X). Runners-up are Vector Linux and Damn-Small Linux. This box is just a firewall.
PII 233, 96MB RAM, 2GB HD -- This box is running Vector Linux 4 with Win4Lin (which has pretty good performance!). It's my wife's workstation/thin client
PII 266, 128MB RAM, 8GB HD -- This box is currently running Mandrake 10, but I want to switch it over to SuSE 9.1 this weekend. It's my file/print server at home. I like to call it "the box that wouldn't die", as it has literally been through the 9 portals of the abyss and back unscathed. And all I got was a lousy t-shirt.
Celeron 533, 128MB RAM, diskless -- This is my multimedia station. I use GeexBox (live CD) to power it.
My workstation is an AMD XP PRO 2600, 512MB, 2x80GB HD. I've got SuSE 9.1 on it. Love it.
There are a number of excellent, smaller distributions out there that will more than meet your needs, both with X and without X. One of the gems of the "light" distro family is definitely Vector Linux, but there are others such as Damn-Small Linux, 2-Disk X, etc. Check out http://www.distrowatch.org for a better list.
Have fun!
Matt
