I've ran a RH based firewall/router on a 266Mhz with 32MB of RAM with
out a hitch before. The 250 with a half-gig of RAM would be no
problem, you could could even drop down to 128MB and you wouldn't
notice it. Just make sure you do don't install X.

Subject: [MLUG] Slowest machine
To: MLUG Members <EMAIL:PROTECTED>
What are the slowest machines that you guys have running Linux on?
I'm currently running a Celeron 500Mhz with 256MB RAM with RH9.0 on
it. However, since RH is totally done with the updates, I need to
swap it out in favor of Suse or another distro. The closest machine I
have to it is a PII, 250Mhz with 512MB RAM (could expand to 1GB if
needed).
I am only using the Linux machine as a firewall router setup. No
number crunching. The machine generally runs in "x", but does do
anything there other than troubleshoot internet connections (to make
sure the triple redundant firewalls aren't killing aps). Since it is
my firewall, I don't have the time to take the RH machine down and
start over on it. My only option to build it on a spare machine.
Any help on how old I can go is appreciated.
