I like DLink or Linksys for low-end stuff like a home user would use.
Your range will depend on what's in between and how good your antenea
is. For ~$100 you can get an antenea that should be able to reach a mile
(easily) over flat terrain without to many nasty big solid things in
between. I'vw bwwn toying with the idea of trying to reach 5 miles away
so I could hit where Jennifer works.
