About the "can be fine tuned to perform better", are you referring to the hdparm utility?
If not, what are you referring to specifically?
Got my swap set up on hda2, hdb1 and hdd 1 now. There /is/ a difference! Setting it up as the first partition on my disks really decreases access times.
