Alot of the up2date problems are that the redhat mirror is ALWAYS
swamped. Look here:

for an example yum.conf that has a large number of mirrors in it.
You'll have alot more luck installing packages from a mirror than using
the default Red Hat site.

it works alot better than up2date does.
