Hey all,
Decided to give myself a newbie day off and just play, try to relearn
some commands that I had let get rusty. Has been good, reconfigured
hubbys knoppix hd install so he can play mahjongg and do ebay, read
email, he likes linux fine if it lets him do that (wonder how many
wives can say they reconfigured their husbands knopppix install??? sort
of like baking a chocolate cake for him). I am on Suse 9 on my
computer, miss my debian stable/unstable/testing whatever with knoppix.
I did manage to get the networking going with knoppix/deb, usually I
have to reboot but have to fix lilo so rebooting is a pain to say the
least. Funny sidelight is wireless keyboard I got hubby for
valentines, works fine on debian but wireless mouse just isn't there??
I just plugged in ye olde usb mouse and it worked fine. Wireless
keyboard and mouse are desktop set both work off of same receiver dealy
(extreme tech jargon for the next it generation,---- dealy-used here to
mean little black box, not to be confused with thingamabob). Never
even considered wireless issue? Now I have to figure out why dcopserver
says it isn't running.
I have been trying to get gimp2 installed, PLEASE don't tell me it's
precompiled somewhere for Suse, well it is but site is evidently too
busy for me, so I worked and worked, it's installed but haven't really
tried it out yet because I'm not happy with yast, seems so white
bread---windows do it their way or no way, rpm is better but would be so
neat to have apt get so I just got it all.
You have to remember all I have done with linux for probably months is
an occasional boot and installation, been too busy on windows doing
paperwork etc. Made up my mind I'm doing linux or at least most of the
time.
This all started when I wanted to access the help file on gimp and it
wasn't there, found it for gimp 2 and said hey I just have 1.3.x, I want
the NEW AND IMPROVED GIMP even if I can barely resize a picture in the
old one.
No questions, complaints, or whines, just a good day of not actually
breaking anything but fixing lots. Only problem is returning to the
normal world is always hard after a day of file searches, copying,
pasting, finding arguments, dependencies, etc. Did ya ever think it's
(linux) just a GIANT jigsaw puzzle we are each putting together to our
perfect specifications?? (at least for the next 5 minutes till we think
of something new) Like a concert pianist and a symphony?? Boy it's
getting deep now. I"m quitting.
Teresa
