I use one called 'CenterICQ'. It is curses-based, which I find
less annoying to use than a mouse-clicky one.

untar the sources and look at README and/or INSTALL.

You can do that. For a boot disk use Knoppix or similar.
Modern distros are so easy to install, I would just backup
/home and /usr/local, then reinstall from the distro boot disk.
You said you are using Fedora? I think the latest snapshot
is using kernel 2.6. Two birds, one stone.
Good luck and welcome to the list.
PS. I found a "Linux on X31" mailing list for my laptop. Any
bizarre configuration questions are usually answered over
there... I don't know if your model has a mailing list. You
could always try the linux-on-thinkpad list.

Mark
