Since RedCarpet 2 you've been able to add additional channels and anyone
is able to set up their own channel. Probably not yet on par with the
number of Debian package sources out there but it's getting there. Also
rug, the command-line utility (part of Red Carpet) , is much nicer to
use than apt. It's just better thought out. Being experienced in both
rpm and deb I can really say that the combination of rug + rpm is easier
than the assortment of tools required to work with deb packages.
If RedHat had any sense they'd make Red Carpet their default package
management tool. The only thing I still feel the need for, something as
easy to work with as tar, is for a good rpm packaging tool. Something
that maybe doesn't offer the flexibility of existing solutions but that
is extremely easy to use. Something with a GUI as easy to use as WinZip.
Even if all it did was let you select files and indicate where in the
file tree they should be installed. As rpm's instead of tarballs they
could clean up neatly after themselves which IMO is important. Using
tarballs you lose the clean transactions of adding/removing software
with packages.
